Mary Magdalene Speegle Johnson, of Gardendale, AL was born February 9, 1925 in Crane Hill, AL and passed away Monday, April 9, 2018 at the age of 93. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and grandmother who was loved and will be greatly missed. Magdalene was the oldest living, and charter member of Central Baptist Church in Mt. Olive where she enjoyed worshipping and singing. In her early years she was active in the Community Home Demonstration Club where she received several statewide awards for her sewing talent. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Calvin William “Jack” Johnson; parents, William Botler and Mittie Alberta (Trimble) Speegle; two brothers, Dexter Bernard Speegle and Roscoe Speegle; a sister, Berniece Speegle Howlett. Survivors include four daughters, Rachel Byrd (Tom), Beverly Jean Wunderlich, Alberta Wadsworth (Gary), and Regina Graham ( Jeff); two sisters, Retha Speegle Parker and Willodean Frances Speegle Johnson; grandchildren, Lee Byrd (Mindi), Joey Byrd, Jared Alan Wunderlich (Amanda), Derrick Wadsworth (Erin), Jennifer Wadsworth Neal (JR), Jordan Graham, and Jason Graham; great grandchildren, Jessica Allen (Jeff), Emma Grace Wunderlich, Ethan Calvin Wunderlich, David Alan Wunderlich, Lyia Joy Wunderlich, Jack Owen Wunderlich, Colin Wadsworth, Noah Touchton and Brenan Touchton, Davis Wadsworth, Corban Neal, and Mary Neal; and two great-great grandchildren, Ruby Allen and Emma Allen; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 16th at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel from 5 until 8 PM followed by chapel services on Tuesday beginning at 2 PM. Interment will be in adjoining Oakwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers please make donations to United Way Area Agency on Aging (UWAAA); Established under the Older Americans Act (OAA) in 1973 to respond to the needs of older adults to choose “Age in Place” and/or remain in their homes and communities; P.O.
