JD Weeks, 83, of Gardendale, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2020, of COVID-19 at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Birmingham, AL, with his wife Linda by his side. He was born in Bug Tussle, Cullman County, Alabama on April 12, 1937, to Era Earl Weeks and Lillie Myrtle Heatherly.
JD graduated in 1955 from Phillips High School, Birmingham, AL. He received from The University of Alabama in Birmingham a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1979 and a Master of Public Administration in 1981. JD Weeks received a Doctorate in Public Health Administration from the University of Alabama and served as an adjunct faculty member with Columbia Southern University.
JD Weeks retired after 29+ years from Jefferson County Department of Health in 1994 as the Senior Administrative Analyst for Health Center Administration.
JD Weeks’ interest in the early history and development of Birmingham and his retirement hobby of collecting more than 60,000 postcards led him to publish a 1999 book titled “Birmingham: A Vintage Postcard Tour”, which has had 5 printings. This prolific author published many books some of which are: “Postcard History of Panama City”, “Premocar Made in Birmingham “, “We Lead the Way” about Phillips High School, “Birmingham Then and Now” lifted off on the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-119 for the International Space Station traveling with Astronaut Mike Finke. JD’s last published book was “North Birmingham A City of its Own” and his “pride and joy”. .
Mr. JD Weeks was a member of the Alabama Retired State Employees’ Association/Alabama Public Employees’ Advocacy League, commonly known as ARSEA/APEAL, since his retirement from public service in 1994. The State of Alabama selected JD Weeks as a permanent member of the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. He was a member of The Alabama Archaeological Society, The Birmingham Historical Society, The Alabama Genealogical Society and a Board Member of The Gardendale Historical Society and The Gardendale Library.
JD Weeks was preceded in death by his parents Era Earl and Lillie Myrtle Weeks; his sister Bobbie Jo Davis; and his grandson Stephen Middleton Weeks.
JD Weeks is survived by his loving wife, Linda Lanham Weeks of Gardendale, AL, and married on April 14, 2013, at Palmerdale United Methodist Church, Pinson, AL, by Pastor Jason McIntosh.
JD Weeks is survived by his son Stephen (Slavka) Weeks of Houston, TX; his daughter Catherine (Christopher) Shelnutt of Gardendale, AL; his daughter Jennifer (Danny) Brittian of Gardendale, AL; his grandchildren Edmund, Hugh and Richard Weeks; Christopher, Matthew, Elizabeth and Jonathan Shelnutt; Jarred (Tori) Brittian; James (Suzanna) Brittian. Great Grandson North Michael Brittian.
JD Weeks is survived by his step-daughter Cathy (Ken) Dixon; step-son Charles (Robin) Horne and step-grandchildren Patrick (Hailey) Dixon and Brian and Sarah Horne.
JD Weeks is also survived by loving nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives
***JD Weeks had a joyous reunion with his loving dog Radar on August 3, 2020 at The Rainbow Bridge.
