James was a member of the Green Station Baptist Church. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He retired from Jefferson County Environmental Services after 22 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going to church, fishing, and he liked to share memories of his life from childhood through adulthood with his family and friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie and Myrtle Willoughby; his loving wife of 72 years, Clytee Willoughby; four siblings; great grandchildren, Madison Willoughby and Andrew Carr.
James is survived by his sons, Kenneth M. Willoughby (Becky), Joe D. Willoughby (Renee) and David L. Willoughby (Paula); daughter, Nancy C. Duke (Daniel); brother Bill Willoughby; grandchildren, Christie Bates, Kendal Carr, James Willoughby, Matthew Duke, and Danielle Pope; great grandchildren, Jenna Burns, Emilee Carr, Maeva Pope, Glover Pope, Selah Pope, Sullivan Willoughby, and Allie Drew Carr; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Services will be held at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel on Saturday, June 20, 2020 with a visitation to begin at 10:00am; funeral service at 11:00am followed by his burial in Oakwood Memorial Gardens.
