James was born on August 15, 1953 to JR and Voder Freeman of Fultondale, Alabama. He was a graduate of Gardendale High School. Earned a Master’s degree in Economics from University of Alabama Birmingham. He was a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon.
James began working with the Birmingham Water Works Board in 1972 and retired as an executive in 2003.
James enjoyed golf, traveling, riding his Harley Davidson and especially loved spending time at the beach. He was an avid Alabama fan and loved his loyal canine companion, Fergie.
James was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was above all proud of his children and grandchildren.
James is predeceased in death by his parents JR and Voder Freeman and his sister Dianne Carroll.
James is survived by his devoted and loving wife Carmel Tanner Freeman, his three children Leslie Ellison (Daryl), Ashley Wood (Eric) and Blake Freeman (Kristi). Stepchildren: Tucker Sherrill, Tanner Sherrill, Colton Adams. Grandchildren: Gavin Ellison, Lawson Wood, Ava Ellison, Amelia Wood, Asher Freeman and Mills Freeman. Sister: Judy Lyons (Donnie)

Celebration of life service will be held at Ridout’s Gardendale on Monday, February 13th 2023 with viewing at 3:00PM followed by memorial service at 4:00PM.
