Lam Cheng, 98, of Gahanna, OH passed away peacefully at home on November 23, 2022. Lam was born in Guangzhou, China on 11/12/1924. He attended the Whampoa Military Academy in 1942 and enlisted after graduation to the National Army under Kuomintang in WWII against Japan. He was in active status until 1948 when he retired from the service as a Major.
Lam married Lee Lee Ho in 1948 and moved to Hong Kong the following year. Theirs’ was a 74 year journey through the Chinese Civil War and they experienced heavy unemployment and riots during the early parts of their marriage. With hard work and perseverance, Lam and Lee Lee raised 6 children with love, fun and respect. Lam and family immigrated to the United States in 1979 and eventually retired in 1990. Lam’s hobbies included singing, dancing, soccer, and traveling. He traveled to Taiwan every year for the October 10 National Day.
Lam is survived by his wife, Lee Lee; his 6 children, Dominic Cheng, Garear (Anson) Chan, Ho Yan Cheng (Kin Kuen Choy), Philip (Seong) Cheng, Samson (Rosa) Cheng, and Joe (Esther) Cheng; godson Paul Poh (Shulan Li); 11 grandchildren, Clement Cheng (Moon Kong), Pearl Chan (Greg Welliver), Vivian Choy, Marian Choy (Pak Tik Paterson Lam), Kevin Choy, Arthur Cheng (Alice Wang), Stephen Cheng, Esther (Mike) Szeto, Kason Cheng (Stephanie Owens), Tiffany Cheng, and Kyle Cheng; and 8 great grandchildren, Keaton Cheng, Milo Cheng, Morgan Welliver, Sydney Welliver, Audrey Lam, Atlas Cheng, Cynthia Szeto, Elizabeth Szeto.
Lam was blessed with a humorous personality, good health and abundance of family members. To celebrate his 98 years of life, the family will receive friends at Schoedinger Northeast Funeral Home, 1051 E Johnstown Rd, Gahanna, OH 43230 on Friday, December 2, 2022 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Lam’s funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 10:30 am. Services will conclude with burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
