James Eugene Millard — lovingly known as “Gene” or “Coach” — passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by his devoted family. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, mentor, and community leader, Gene lived a life marked by purpose, strength, service, and unwavering love.
Born on February 1, 1935, in Dayton, Ohio, to Mildred and Roy Lee Millard, Gene built a life grounded in faith, commitment, and care for others. On March 19, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Sally Ann Settle, after their love story began in the 8th grade. Their remarkable 68-year marriage stood as a testament to enduring love and mutual devotion — filled with laughter, partnership, and a deep bond that served as a guiding light for all who knew them.
Gene was a loving and dedicated father to his children: Todd, Becky (deceased, 1987), Mike, and Mindy. His steadfast support and wise guidance shaped their lives and instilled strength, character, and confidence. He found immeasurable joy in fatherhood, and his legacy continues through the lives of his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally; his cherished daughter, Becky Millard Attwood; and his daughter-in-law, Susan Clark Millard. Though their absence is deeply felt, their memories live on in the hearts of those who loved them.
Gene is survived by his children- Todd Millard (Nancy), Michael Millard (Carol), and Mindy Millard Cain (Trevor)- and a treasured legacy of grandchildren: Emily Millard, Laura Millard, Kaycie Millard Klausing (Justin), Abby Martin (Andrew), Jack Rubertus (Emilie), Taylor Millard, Payton Millard Steward (Brennan), Denton Cain, Ethan Cain, and Kelsey Cain. He was deeply proud of each of them and celebrated their unique talents and accomplishments. Gene also delighted in his great-grandchildren: Nora Klausing, Henry Klausing, James Martin, Kate Martin, and Samuel Martin — each one bringing him tremendous joy and love.
As a student-athlete and captain of The Ohio State University men’s basketball team (1953–1957), and later as an assistant coach (1957–1958), Gene was a fierce competitor — known for his tenacity, focus, and natural leadership. He brought that same drive into a decades-long career in education and athletics, shaping lives through his roles at Washington Court House High School and Bexley High School.
At Bexley, Gene served with distinction as Boys’ Head Basketball Coach (1962–1987, 1994–1997), Girls’ Head Basketball Coach (1998–1999), History Teacher (1962–1986), and Athletic Director (1986–1999). In every role, he brought passion, discipline, and a deep sense of responsibility to those he served.
Coach Millard’s impact extended far beyond the court. He was a father figure, mentor, and steady presence in the lives of countless students and athletes. His expectations were high — not only for performance, but for character, discipline, and heart. He believed in the potential of every individual and dedicated his life to helping others become the best version of themselves.
While his competitive spirit pushed his teams to achieve greatness, it was his commitment to people that left the most lasting mark. As a pillar of strength and encouragement, Gene “showed up” — in big and small moments — in ways that mattered for the people in his life. He led with integrity, challenged with purpose, and loved with his whole heart.
Throughout his distinguished career, Gene received numerous awards and Hall of Fame inductions — honors he accepted with characteristic humility. He consistently credited his success to his beloved wife, Sally; the dedication and resilience of his players; and the support of his family and fellow coaches who stood beside him.
To many, Gene was the “gold standard” — someone who lived each day with intention and giving 110% effort. His impact reached far beyond the gymnasium; it was reflected in the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the values he embodied.
Gene’s legacy is one of love, strength, and service — a legacy that continues living on in the countless lives he touched.
A visitation to honor and celebrate Gene’s life will be held on Friday, April 18, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Schoedinger Margarum Northeast, 1051 East Johnstown Road, Gahanna, OH.
