David “Dave” Louis Oty, 79, passed away on April 11, 2025. He was born in Columbus, OH on August 29, 1945, to Jack and Margaret (Suttner) Oty. He attended Heyl, Deshler, Roosevelt, South, and Walnut Ridge schools, graduating from Walnut Ridge in 1963. After graduation, Dave served in the United States Air Force from 1965 – 1969, including time spent in South Korea during the Pueblo Incident.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Dave worked for Huntington Bank, Channel 6, and the Scioto Downs and Beulah Park as a Cashier and Money Room Manager.
Dave was a long-time horse racing enthusiast, having visited and worked at many tracks all across the United States, including Michigan, Minnesota, Florida, and Colorado. Dave was a big OSU Basketball fan and Boston Red Sox fan. During summers, Dave spent a day or two every week on the golf course. He looked forward to spending time with friends and family, including taking fishing trips to Michigan and New York or playing cards (including O’Hell, Poker, and Oklahoma Rum). Dave was also a self-taught painter, mainly creating artwork featuring wildlife and pets. He will be remembered fondly for his excellent sense of humor and deeply missed by those who knew him.
Dave is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother and sister-in-law Fred and Marsha Oty.
Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Diana and Laura Oty; brother and sister-in-law Steve and Brenda Oty; nephews Douglas Holbrook and Jonathan Oty; niece Emily Oty; and many other cherished friends and relatives.
Visitation will be held at Schoedinger Northeast Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, from 11:00am - 1:00pm, with Dave's funeral service beginning at 1:00pm. Services will conclude with interment at Fernwood Cemetery in Lockbourne, Ohio.
