Dr. Christine Michelle Thorne, of New Albany, Ohio, passed on March 17th, 2023. She is survived by her two daughters, Katy and Sarah Greskovich, her parents Sandra and C. Michael Thorne, her three brothers Christopher, Jonathan and Victor Thorne, her three sisters-in-law Bridget, Alicia, and Yuliya Thorne, and her nieces and nephews, Audrey, Jackson, Vivian, Quinn, Cecilia, Owen, and Emma Thorne.
Christine's determined spirit and spunk were present from a young age. As a child, she declared her plans to attend Harvard University to a family friend, years before the college officially became coed. She graduated high school from Columbus School for Girls, where she built lifelong friendships as the captain of the track and field hockey teams and graduated as a National Merit Scholar and a member of the Cum Laude Honor Society. For her academic and athletic achievements, she was awarded the Williams College Scholar-Athlete Award upon graduation. Additionally, she played “Minnie” in the Saint Charles musical production of West Side Story. Throughout her life, Christine loved music and dancing. She had said in another life she would be a professional dancer. Her family and friends will always remember her lighting up the dance floor at any event.
Christine followed through on her childhood plans and graduated from Harvard in 1988 Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Biological Anthropology. A highlight of her college career was attending the Koobi Fora Field School at Lake Turkana in Kenya, where she excavated alongside renowned paleoanthropologist, Dr. Richard Leakey.
Inspired by her father, Dr. C. Michael Thorne, Christine became a doctor, graduating from Case Western Reserve Medical School in 1992. She completed her residency in ophthalmology at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, and went on to become an eye surgeon at the Cleveland V.A., where she helped thousands of patients achieve better sight. As an appointed faculty member at Case Western School of Medicine, she trained the next generations of residents in eye surgery.
Being a mother was Christine’s greatest joy and she was immensely proud of her two daughters. She was present at every play, concert, soccer game, and robotics tournament. In every situation she was her daughters’ fiercest supporter and advocate.
Throughout her life, Christine loved to travel with her family throughout the US, Europe, and the Caribbean, especially dozens of trips to Barbados. She was a perfecter of holiday celebrations with family and loved to send out thoughtful cards for every occasion. Christine went above and beyond for her family, juggling her job at Columbus Ophthalmology Associates while supporting and caring for her parents. She will forever be remembered for her humor, wit, and incredible heart present in everything she did.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, our family believes that Christine would want any contributions to directly support her greatest joys and best friends, her daughters. Thank you for your consideration.
