Charles “Chic” Conroy of Gahanna, OH peacefully passed away on Friday, February 10, 2023 at the age of 76. He was surrounded by his adoring children and sister, as well as his dedicated caregivers, and beloved cat, Gunnar.
Chic is survived by his children, Adam Conroy, Ryan (Sarah) Conroy, Emma Conroy, sisters MaryJo Conroy and Karen (Bruce) Herrmann, along with three grandchildren, Cameron, Jacob and Olivia Conroy, and nephews Matt (Jessica) Herrmann, John Herrmann, and niece Andrea (Shane Jones) Herrmann. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Josephine Conroy and granddaughter Lillian Conroy.
Chic grew up in Columbus, and even as a child was always good with his hands, where he spent his free time building models, electronics, etc. He excelled scholastically, graduating from Aquinas High School in 1964, and subsequently earned multiple degrees from The Ohio State University: undergraduate (1968), Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) (1971), and Master of Science (MS) for orthodontics from the College of Dentistry (1975). In return, he gave back to the university as loyal longstanding member of the institution’s President’s Club.
Chic lived a life full of achievements and adventures thanks to his incredible drive, work ethic, and countless interests. He successfully built and maintained two orthodontic practices in Gahanna/New Albany and Dublin, until retiring after practicing for nearly 40 years. He took extreme pride in his profession, running a reputable practice with the latest technologies, actively celebrating his patients with recognition events, and even traveling to Russia in 1990 to share techniques as part of a professional exchange.
He was a well-respected member of the Gahanna community, including as a charter member of the Gahanna Rotary Club since 1978 to which he faithfully served including as chapter president in 2000-2001.
Chic dedicated his life to children, not only in developing their beautiful smiles through his profession, but even more so as a doting father and grandfather. He took great pride in building a home in 1983 to provide his family with everlasting memories. In his retirement, he further served the community and children by volunteering at Royal Manor Elementary School in a student reading enhancement program. Additionally, he volunteered at Furniture Bank of Central Ohio.
At an early age Chic developed a love of boating, which would carry into adulthood where he loved to be on or in the water. In addition to boating, he was a skilled water skier and became a certified scuba diver. His other hobbies throughout life included being Buckeye football season ticket holder, snow skiing, ballroom dancing, flying lessons and auto racing.
He lived a tremendous life and will be sorely missed by all those whose lives he touched.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, February 26 from 2pm – 5pm at Schoedinger Northeast, 1051 East Johnstown Road, Gahanna. A memorial service for family will be held Monday, February 27 at 10:30am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Columbus, followed by inurnment at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lockbourne.
