Chapel funeral service will be at 12:30 PM, Friday, for W. Frank Shew, Jr., 70, of Gadsden, who died Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Rev. Jeremy Beck will officiate with burial to follow at Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral Home and Cremation Services directing.
Mr. Shew was a longtime resident of Etowah County. He was a member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Gadsden. He grew up in Meadville, PA and attended schools in Meadville and Greenville, PA. He came to Gadsden in 1957. He was a businessman in the advertising business, working at Gadsden Times for a number of years and later owned Frank Shew Advertising and Specialties. He was presented a Recognition of Satisfactory Completion of Continuing Education Programs and was officially designated to be a Master Advertising Specialist.
He was Administrative Assistant for former Mayor Steve Means and later served on the Gadsden Civil Service Board. He was President of the Greater Gadsden Chamber of Commerce and was active in a variety of civic and professional organizations. He was a court attendant for Judge Clark Hall’s Courtroom. He was an avid golfer and loved playing golf and cards with his friends. He also was an avid Auburn Fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Frank Shew, Sr. and Anne Peal Shew.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty Shew; son, W. Frank Shew III (Kristi) of Birmingham; beloved grandson, W. Frank Shew IV; sisters, Beverly (Tom) Batey of Gadsden, Mary Shew of Foley, AL; sisters-in-law, Bernice (Joe) Dorn, Margaret Whisenant; Brothers-in-law, Clyde Breedwell, Bobby Breedwell (Melba); niece, Gay Mayfield, and other nieces and nephews; and best friends Melton and Freda Burgess.
Pallbearers will be Melton Burgess, Ken Eatman, George Morris, Philip Crain, Hon. Clark Hall, Steve Means, Stanley Hawkins. Honorary Pallbearers will be Elders and Members of First Presbyterian Church of Gadsden, Jackie Biddle, Jim Slichenmyer, Mike Bilbro, James Cranford, James Ledbetter, BL Long, Circuit Clerk Billy Yates and Staff.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to First Presbyterian Church. 520 Chestnut St. Gadsden, AL 35901.
The family will accept friends from 6 until 8 on Thursday evening at Collier-Butler Funeral Home.
