There will be a service for Mr. Higgins and his wife, Peggy Nabors Higgins that passed away three weeks ago. The service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, September 24, 2021 at First Baptist Church Gadsden, with Pastor Mat Alexander, Rev. Woodie Turner, and Rev. Larry Fuhrman officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Thursday and one hour before the service Friday at First Baptist Church, Gadsden. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Mr. Higgins was born to John Melvin Higgins and Lillie Frances Higgins and grew up in Ivalee, Alabama. He graduated from Gadsden High School where he was a stand-out basketball player. He attended Gadsden State Junior College on a Basketball Scholarship. Mr. Higgins retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company after 33 years. He then opened The Lawn Doctor until his retirement. Mr. Higgins loved coaching T-Ball, Baseball, and RA Basketball. He was a leader to each of the kids he coached through the years. He volunteered in his community and previously served with the National Red Cross Disaster Team and was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award. Mr. Higgins served as a Deacon at First Baptist Church, Gadsden where he also served in many different capacities and committees.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Nabors Higgins.
Mr. Higgins is survived by his daughter, Jana Higgins Tarleton and her husband Mike, his son Eric Higgins and his wife Elizabeth, and his grandchildren, Hannah Leath and Mattie Alan Tarleton, Wilson Noble and Samuel Thornton Higgins; his sister and brother-in-law; Joan Kimbril and Robert, brother Randy Higgins; sister-in-law Sherri Higgins and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be: Brian Kimbril, Jason Kimbril, Alex Freeman, Drew Smith, Brett Smith, Jamie Day, J.D. McDuffie, Andrew Roberts, David Owen, Charley Wiggins, Drew Smith and Brett Smith.
Honorary Pallbearers are the CCU and 5th Floor nurses and staff at Riverview Regional Hospital.
