Ray Edward Hope, age 89, of Gadsden, Alabama, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025. Ray was a devoted family man, a proud U.S. Navy veteran, and an active member of several organizations throughout his life.
Ray served his country honorably for over 20 years as a Gunner’s Mate First Class (GMG1) in the U.S. Navy, earning the respect and admiration of his peers and superiors. After retiring from the Navy, he continued his service to others through his deep involvement in his community. Ray was a lifetime member of the VFW 2760, where he served as Post Commander, a member of the Shriners (Mason), and an active participant in the BOPE Elks Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Diona Lee Hope; son, John David Hope; brother, Alan Hope; and his parents, Helen and Cecil Bennett.
Ray is survived by his children, Jerry (Janet) Hope, Angie (Mike) Griffin, Charlene (Reggie) Powell, Hanna (Zack) Barber, Tammy Foster, Allen Hope, Thomas Hope, and Tim Holdbrooks; his brother, Mike Bennett; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will remember him fondly and continue his legacy of love and strength.
Pallbearers will be Chase Holdbrooks, Zack Barber, Reggie Powell, and Allen Abney.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Riverview Regional CCU and all the nursing staff, with a special thank you to Brittany Humphry, for their compassionate care during Ray’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leukemia-Cancer Associations in Ray’s memory.
A visitation for Ray will be held Friday, April 11, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Collier-Butler Funeral & Cremation Services, 824 Rainbow Drive, Gadsden, Alabama 35901. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 11:30 AM at Rainbow Memorial Gardens, 1440 W Grand Ave, Gadsden, Alabama 35904. Rev. Larry Perkins will officiate.
Ray will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of service, generosity, and dedication to his family and community will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
