Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2015 at Collier-Butler Chapel for Opal Vernice Adcock Elsberry, 92 who died Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Rev. Steve Schrader will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing.
Mrs. Elsberry was born in Mississippi on July 29, 1922. She was the oldest of 6 siblings. She and her family moved to Alabama when she was 12. She began working at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company when she was 20, where she became one of many “Rosie the Riveters” of her time. She soon met and married Lindsey Elsberry, who she says she was “stuck on” from the start. Opal and Lindsey built a house in Whorton Bend, and made it a home with four children, pets, and a garden. She was a member of Whorton Bend Baptist Church and lived in the house she raised her family in until the last 6 months of her life. When Opal joined her Lord and Savior in Heaven, she reunited with her husband, Lindsey, son Mike, and many other loved ones that she talked about missing often.
She is survived by her daughters, Rhonda (Stanley) McClellan and Nancy (Steve) Schrader; and son, Randy (Cindy) Elsberry. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, whom she loved to call her “peaches”; and daughter-in-law Becky Elsberry.
Pallbearers will be Shane Elsberry, Landon Sparks, Andrew Spraks, Nathan Elsberry, Jason Grizzard, Jason Moon, and David McCormick.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.
The family will accept friends from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Friday prior to the service.
