Michael L. Downey, age 71 of Gadsden, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2016. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is directing. The family will accept friends Saturday, August 13, 2016 from 3:00-5:00pm
Michael was a native of Etowah County. He played football at Glencoe High School where he was known as the legendary Michael “Duck” Downey. Michael was a master welder, electrician and mechanic at Gulf State Steel for 33 years. He was stronger, faster, smarter and better looking than any man on earth, in his children’s eyes. He was very loving and giving, offering to help anyone in need. Michael was one of the most creative individuals, adding “character” to everything he touched.
Michael is survived by his wife, Gail Downey; twin sister, Marcia (Wayne) Rhodes; children, Jessica Diane (Daniel) Downey, Tessa Leigh (Nick) Metcalf, and Michael “Drufus” (Rebecca) Downey; step-son, Thomas Warren Gibbs; grandchildren, Carson, Noah, Natalie, and Delilah; and many nieces and nephews
In lieu of flowers (as Dad would say it) “take that money and have yourself a good time”.
Special thanks to Julie Downey for her friendship, support and love throughout the years.
