Merle Wayne Firestone, age 85, of Southside, Alabama and a lifelong resident of Etowah County, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2023. Merle is survived by his brothers Bill and Mike, his son Scott, and his grandsons Mason, Cameron, Matthew, and Clayton. Merle was born in Gadsden, Alabama on March 20, 1938 to Amon and Beulah Firestone. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Gerald, his wife, Laura, and son, King.
Merle proudly enlisted in the Navy in 1956 when he was 18, and served as a rescue swimmer aboard the USS Lexington until 1960. After leaving the service, he worked at Tro-Fe Dairy for 20 years, owned a cleaning service, owned Tony’s restaurant, and sold real estate. Merle met Laura Joyce King, his lifelong sweetheart, when he was 12 years old. They married just out of high school and spent the next 64 years making memories, going on adventures, and raising a family.
Merle was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, Alabama football, spending summers at the beach, and any time spent with friends and family. Merle was known by many and never met a stranger. He was a source of strength and leadership to his family.
He will be deeply missed by his family. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
