Keith Barton Watts, beloved husband, father, Papa, and pastor, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, September 13. Born August 28, 1964, Bart dedicated his life to his faith, family, and community.
Bart is survived by his wife and best friend, Susan, with whom he shared 36 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a loving home in Gadsden, Alabama, where they raised their three children: Sam (Kami) of Birmingham; Jill (Reed) of Gadsden; and JoBeth of Scottsboro. Bart was a proud Papa to Hattie, Solomon, Beatrix, Lydia, and David, with another grandchild on the way. Bart is also survived by his brothers, Jimmy and Brett (Florence), sisters-in-law, Donna (Jeff) and Amy (Pat), and mother-in-law, Norma.
Bart is preceded in death by his parents, James and Dorothy.
He spent his time reading, making and listening to music, hiking, and playing with his grandkids. Bart owned and operated Gadsden Christian Bookstore for 17 years, where he involved the whole family and the children had their first jobs. During this time, he deeply integrated himself into the downtown community, befriending everyone he met.
Bart was the pastor of Edgewood Baptist Church for the past 10 years. Leading his church family was one of his greatest joys. His love for his congregation and community was evident through his care, attention, and ministry. The Kingdom is greater because of his life.
His absence here will leave a huge void in the lives of all who love him, but for Bart, death has no sting. He is experiencing unspeakable joy face-to-face with his Savior.
Services will be held at Edgewood Baptist Church on Tuesday, September 17, at 3:00 pm. The family will receive visitors from 1 until 3 prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Edgewood Baptist Church or to those in need.
