John Frank Calvert passed peacefully, Friday, March 12, 2021 at the age of 85. He was born, February 11, 1936 in Warrior, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Walter Young and Louise Katherine Thomas Calvert; brother, Walter Howard Calvert, and son, Michael Alan Hampton Calvert.
He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Joyce Arrington Calvert; children, Steven T. “Red” Calvert, Thoth Calvert, Jenny Perkinson (John), Tony Calvert (Lana Elrod), Steven Cohen, and Chris Cohen. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Braxton and Brenna Rary, Cooper Lee , Luke Cohen, Claire Beth, Carter and Camille Calvert, as well as his niece MaryJon Dudley (Mitch).
John began working at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in 1959. He was a member of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Supervisional Top Ten Club and retired after 35 years of service. He was the head basketball coach at General Forrest Junior High School in 1958. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Gadsden, Alabama.
John was an avid Auburn Football fan; he loved basketball, played golf, loved traveling with his wife, Joyce, loved gardening, and was a car enthusiast. He loved telling a good story, and more than anything was a dear and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a cheerful, joyful, kind and selfless man.
He was cared for and surrounded by his family, loved ones, and friends during the final days of his life.
A graveside service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Crestwood Cemetery in Gadsden, Alabama Tuesday, March 16th at 1:00 p.m. with Mat Alexander officiating.
