Jerry W. Jones, 90, of Southside, AL passed away Monday, January 30, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Collier Butler Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Rea will officiate. Burial will follow at Williams Southside Cemetery. Visitation will be held between 12:00 noon until the hour of services Friday.
Pallbearers will be Alex Jones, Zack Estes, Corey McDaniel, Anthony Goodwin, Chris Jones and Ben Brown. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill Thornton’s Sunday School Class, Sam Bender, Pete Bender, Jeff Noah, Babe Entrekin, Albert Davis, R.C. Burgess, Bobby West, Les Browning and Gary Singleton.
Jerry was born on October 11, 1932 to the late J.W. Jones, Sr. and Lillie Payne Jones. He graduated from Southside High School in 1951. He married Barbara Black on March 30, 1957. He retired from Goodyear in 1994 with 43 years service. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. He was a lifetime member of Southside Baptist Church. Jerry was passionate about the games of baseball and softball, as a player, coach, and mentor. He was inducted into the NSA Hall of Fame, the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame, and the Etowah County Sports Hall of Fame, and he played for numerous teams from several states until the age of 85. He enjoyed all types of hunting, especially turkey, quail, and coon. He was a lifetime resident of Southside.
He was preceded in death by his son, Breton Craig Jones; grand-daughter, Jordan Elaine Estes; brothers, Carl Jones (Margaret), J.W. Jones (Elizabeth), Wilburn Jones (Frances), Bill Jones (Mozelle); sisters, Grace Brown (Buster), Hazel Norton (Raymond), Corene Owens (Louie), Josephine Campbell (Henry) and Rachel Jones.
Jerry is survived by his wife; son, Alan Jones (Tina); daughters, Becky Martin (Louis), and Karen Estes (Burt); grandchildren, Andrea Martin (Corey), Alex Jones (Zoe), Zack Estes, Kendra Sherrod (Nath); great-grandchildren, Devyn Estes, and Deklen Sherrod; chosen son, Gary Young; brother in-law, Larry Black (Kay); sister-in-law, Judy Black; numerous nieces and nephews.
