James Allen Garrett, 88, of Southside, passed away on Friday, Aug. 19, 2016. Date of service will be Monday, Aug. 22, 2016; graveside at Williams Southside Memorial Park and visitation will from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Collier-Butler Funeral Home. James was born in Monroeville, on May 20, 1928 to Luther and Virginia Garrett. He served in the Korean War in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. After returning home, he attended Auburn University (Alabama Polytechnic Institute) graduating in 1956 with a degree in agriculture. He then started a 32 year career with the U.S. Government working for the Farmer's Home Administration. During that time, he was county supervisor in Montgomery, Pickens, Mobile, and Tuscaloosa Counties. After retiring in 1990, he and Judy enjoyed traveling, but even more than that, they loved spending time with their grandchildren. When mobility became an issue, James moved to Southside with Debbie and John. James and John spent hours talking and trying to solve world problems and became best of friends. James loved Auburn University and AU football and was quick to give you a "War Eagle!" He was a member of Southside Baptist Church and enjoyed visits from the homebound ministry. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Debbie (John) Strawn; son and daughter-in-law, Tom (Mary Frances) Garrett; son, Jeff Henrickson; son and daughter-in-law, Marty (Katrina) Henrickson; grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Sarah Garrett, Jordan, Josh, Whitney, Rayne, and Faith Henrickson; adopted granddaughter, Jessica Davis; sisters-in-law, Bobbie Garrett and Martha Garrett; and numerous nieces and nephews that he loved. Honorary pallbearers are the grandchildren and Bess Perry.
