David was born on October 11, 1939 in Fairfield, AL to Buena Arther Womack and Charles Hoyt Womack. Following the death of his father, a Birmingham steelworker, the family moved to Collinsville, AL where David graduated from Collinsville High School, Class of 1958. While he would readily admit he was not a particularly gifted athlete, David was a proud member of the CHS football and baseball teams.
After graduation, David continued his education at Snead State College. He took a job with the Alabama Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Gadsden, and was later transferred to the plant in Oxford following the closing of the Gadsden plant.
In 1981, David started working as a service manager at Gadsden Fire Extinguisher in Alabama City. He was a faithful, hardworking employee, and was still on the job at the time of his death.
David married the love of his life, Wanda Plunkett Womack on July 3, 1966 in Fort Payne, AL. They celebrated 52 years of marriage last summer. David and Wanda raised two children, Gina and Alan. David loved his family, and as recently as last Saturday said his happiest times are when he gathers with his family for meals. He was a devoted husband, father and provider. We never once doubted his love for us.
David was a man of many interests. He loved restoring antique gas engines and old farm equipment, and was a member of the Coosa Rusty Iron Association. He enjoyed auto racing, particularly the time he spent as a young man watching some of Alabama’s greatest racing legends at the old Fairground Raceway in Birmingham. David also had a love for trains, especially steam engines. His
children have fond memories of their father taking them to watch steam excursions come through Attalla, and then following the trains up Highway 11 towards Chattanooga. David loved animals, especially cats over the years. He was recently heartbroken when he lost his beloved cat, Buddy.
David was first and foremost a fine Christian man. He served as a deacon at Central Church of Christ, and later Gadsden Church of Christ for many years. You would never hear anyone speak ill of David, and he treated all people with love, kindness and respect. He was a humble man, and would always shy away from praise and recognition. David was truly a servant of God, and left a lasting impression on many people with his quiet Christian example.
David was preceded in death by his father, Charles Hoyt Womack and mother, Buena Arther Womack, and his brothers Fredrick Milton Womack and Jerry Hoyt Womack. It is ironic that his beloved cousin John (Johnny) S. Arther of Glencoe died the day before David left this world. Our family is now without our two reigning patriarchs.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Wanda Plunkett Womack, his daughter Gina Womack of Pelham AL, son Alan Womack (Patricia Denise Avila) of Alexandria, AL, grandchildren, Alyssa Carrizales and Zac Carrizales, sister, Sharon Womack Rutledge of Hoover, AL, as well as a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, coworkers and church family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the School of Biblical Studies, Jos Nigeria, c/o Gadsden Church of Christ, P.O. Box 967, Gadsden, AL 35902, or the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, PO Box 111180 Nashville, TN 37222-1180, or online at http://disasterreliefeffort.org/
