His memorial service will be held at Collier-Butler, Friday, March 28 at 2:00. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service, burial in Crestwood Cemetery. Dr. Allen McClellan, a life-long and close friend of the family, officiating.
Coy was born in St. Clair County October 6, 1930. After graduating from Pell City High School in 1948, he played professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. He entered the military when called upon by his country during the Korean Conflict, was seriously wounded by a land mine, and was later awarded a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He retired from the U.S. Postal System with 35 years of service. Coy was a faithful member of Whites Chapel Baptist Church and CrossPoint Community Church where he served as a deacon and a trustee. In his latter years, Coy was a member of Cornerstone Church, but as he became immobile, was unable to attend. He was an avid Alabama football and basketball fan.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 54 years, Shirley Palmer; parents, Bervil and Agnes Davis; brother, Dwight Davis; sister, Jean Owen.
Coy is survived by his daughter, Pam Richardson (Butch); son, Mike Davis (V.V.) of Gadsden. “Pawpaw” was cherished by his three grandchildren, Joel Davis (Claire) of Homewood, Hannah Warwick (Ryan) of Rainbow City, and Seth Richardson (Allison) of Gadsden. The apple of his eye were his nine great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Nico, and Benjamin Davis, Ella Mae, Emma, Wyatt, and Daniel Richardson, Gideon and Zebulun Warwick. Coy is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Coy loved God, loved his family, and loved his country. He was a man’s man, steadfast and consistent, always standing firm on the truth of scripture. Coy was never angry and always content, understanding and exemplifying that godliness with contentment is great gain (1Timothy 6:6). Many have said of him, “I’ve never known a finer man”. He has been affectionately called Pawpaw by his grands and great-grands all their lives, and through the years, he simply became known as Pawpaw to all those close to him! Everybody loved their Pawpaw, an earthly father whose life reflected the Heavenly Father. A quiet and gentle spirit…this was Coy Davis!
Pallbearers are Joel, Isaiah, Nico, and Benjamin Davis, Seth Richardson, and nephew, Kenny Owen. Honorary Pallbearers are Charles Cook, Wayne East, Mike Fralix, Tommy King and numerous friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Etowah Pregnancy Testing Center, 119 Church Street, Rainbow City, AL 35906.
