Muriel Anne Maher was born Muriel Anne Schwarz on September 18, 1925 in Buffalo, New York to Edmund and Viola Schwarz. She had an older brother Edmund “Bud”Schwarz Jr. who was 4 years older and a brother Kenneth who was 7 years younger. Her older brother Edmund passed away at the age of 15 from Leukemia.
Her family moved to Old Hickory, Tenn. when she was 14. Muriel graduated high school at 16 and went to college at St.Mary’s of the Woods in Indiana graduating with a B.S. in Home Economics. She worked at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La. as a Dietician for several years. Muriel moved back to Buffalo working as a Dietician at Mercy Hospital. She was set up on a blind date with Richard Maher by his brother Bob who delivered bakery goods to the hospital.
They were married May 3, 1952 in Buffalo, New York. They had 6 children, Richard, Timothy, Patrick, Terri, Melissa and Paul. The family moved to Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1958 where they raised the children and became Steeler and Pirate fans for life. Richard was transferred to Fullerton, Ca. with Westinghouse and moved the family out in 1973. Richard was transferred back to Pittsburgh, Pa., to Albuquerque, N.M. and then Carlsbad, N.M. with Muriel enjoying the southwest and peace and quiet with no kids! Richard passed away in 1985 and Muriel moved back to Fullerton, Ca. to be close to her family.
There Muriel volunteered at St. Jude’s Guild for over 30 years, she knit baby caps for St. Jude’s Neonatal ward, she sang in the choir at St. Mary’s and St. Angela’s Catholic Churches, she loved to play golf at Birch Hills and played Bridge for many years.
Muriel passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her brother Ken Schwarz and spouse Linda of Watertown, NY. She is also survived by sons Richard and spouse Gary, Patrick and spouse Sonia, daughters Terri and spouse Wayne Salvino and Melissa and spouse Beau Ricketts. She is also survived by grandchildren Aaron and Krystn Maher, Rob, Tadd, Nate and Nicole Ricketts, Danny, Derra, and Brian Larsh, Rick, Danielle, Michael, Hillary, Matthew and Madia Salvino, Ryan, Cullan and Ali Maher along with 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband Richard and sons Timothy and Paul preceded her in death.
Muriel was the most amazing, loving mom, Aunt, Nana and Great-Nana! She left a wonderful legacy behind for us to remember and cherish always. She’s now in the arms of God surrounded by her heavenly family and friends! You’ll be in our hearts forever mom!❤️🕊️
