Frances (Jurgensmier) Shafer passed away peacefully on October 29, just a few weeks short of her 99th birthday. She was born in Logan, Ohio, one of eight children, and lived there till she met and married the love of her life, Tom Shafer of Nelsonville. They eventually moved to Columbus, where they raised their three children. The house was always filled with laughter, and became a 'second home' for many of their children's friends. She and Tom loved to dance, and spent many wonderful evenings with family and friends at Valley Dale. Both also shared a passion for animals, and would take in any lost or abandoned dog or cat. Frances was an accomplished seamstress and later learned to crochet and knit, joining a wonderful group of women who made beautiful head warmers and booties for babies. She was also an avid card player, belonging to several euchre clubs. She took joy in teaching her children and grandchildren the fun and finesse of the game. Frances worked for over 20 years at the Lazarus Department Store, where she made many good friends who stayed in contact over the years. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Ron and Donna Shafer, Rich and Suzi Shafer, Judy and Rolly Zech; four grandchildren, Dr. Katherine Shafer and husband Andrew Balcomb, Nason and Charla Shafer, Colton and Renee Shafer, Brenton Shafer; one great grandchild, Maddy Shafer; one remaining brother, Bob Jurgensmier; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her presence. Frances lived this past year with her daughter in California, where her body will be cremated. The family will bring her ashes to Ohio in the spring for burial along side her beloved husband, who passed away ten years ago. A Funeral Mass is being held for her at St. Martin de Porres Church in Yorba Linda, CA. on Monday, November 18 at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local animal rescue or shelter facility.
