Ella Lou Wann, 91, died Wednesday, August 13, from a combination of heart and kidney concerns. She was born in High Point, North Carolina, to Ne-Plus Ultra and Henry Taylor, Sr. Her older brothers, H.M. and Roger, called her Sister, and so did many in their community. She graduated with a degree in voice from Salem College, led children's choirs, and performed as an alto soloist in churches and synagogues. Ella Lou married Harold Wann in September, 1944. After Harold's return from WWII, the couple lived at Purdue while he finished school. They followed his career as a commodities trader to Chicago, then New Orleans, where they were king and queen of the Newcomers Club Mardi Gras ball. Lou and Harold settled in Fullerton in 1965. She is survived by Harold, her husband of almost 71 years, her daughter Marilyn Wann of San Francisco, and her brother's widow Anne Taylor of High Point. She was Aunt Lou to the children and grandchildren of lifelong friends Emmet and Mary Wells of Fullerton. In the household of neighbors Mike and Cathy Frazier, she was honorary grandmother and pumpkin-carving judge. Friends and family remember her expansive laugh; her intelligence; her gift for raising spirits, making people feel loved and cared for; and her thorough accomplishment in many generous pursuits, from sewing, knitting, and needlework to school volunteering. The funeral will be held Friday, August 21, at 10 a.m. at Loma Vista Memorial Park in Fullerton, organized by McAulay & Wallace Mortuary. Donations may be made to UC Davis Foundation, memo line: Phil Wells Memorial Scholarship, and mailed to UC Davis Athletics Development, One Shields Ave., Davis,CA 95616, Attn: Sharon Lynch.
