William Fripp Wollenberg, Colonel, U.S. Army passed away June 13, 2023.
Bill was born February 23, 1931, the youngest child of Colonel Christopher Wollenberg and Ada Wollenberg of Farmington, Connecticut. He was predeceased by his sisters Edith, Phyllis and Carolyn and his brother Herbert.
Bill was married to Doris Stocking Wollenberg for 52 years until her death in 2012.
Bill is survived by nieces and nephews and his partner during the final decade of life Dr. Gail Rayner.
After schooling in Farmington, Bill graduated from the Yokohoma American High School, Japan in 1949 and from the University of Connecticut in 1953 with a B.A. degree in Military Science and Government. He was given the Scabbard and Blade award for top honors in this field. Upon graduation he was commissioned second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He graduated from the UNited States Army Command and General Staff College in 1968. Military assignments include: staff and command positions in Germany, 1954-1956 and 1959-1962, and in the Republic of South Vietnam, 1966 and 1972, and as the Commanding Officer, 4th Battalion (Light) (Airborn) 68th Armor, 82nd Airborne Division, 1970 and 1971. Awards and decorations include: the Legion of Merit (with oak leaf cluster), Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with oak leaf cluster), Joint Services Commendation Medal and the Senior Parachutists' Badge. He served in the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Armor U.S. Army. Bill retired 1986 a full Colonel.
In retirement Bill was a Board member of the Retired Military Officers Association, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an active golfer. The Colorado State University Women's golf team hosts the annual Colonel Bill Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic, a competition between 17 NCAA golf teams from universities throughout the western United States.
Bill's life will be celebrated in Colorado at the Ptarmigan Country Club at 1-3 pm on June 18, 2023.
Funeral services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, Farmington, on June 22, 2023, with military honors and internment to follow at the Farmington Riverside Cemetery.
