She grew up on their small dairy farm east of Ault, Colorado. She attended elementary and middle school at Pierce and graduated from Highland High School in Ault. Nancy attended Colorado State College in Greeley and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
In 1962, she married Kenneth Wagner. They were married for 53 wonderful years. The family moved from Ault to Fort Collins in 1963 where Nancy helped to open the new Bennett Elementary School in the fall of 1963. She taught fourth and fifth grades for 36 wonderful years at Bennett. Nancy also helped to start the first Head Start Program in Fort Collins early in her career. She positively touched many lives during her teaching career.
After retiring in 1999, Nancy continued to volunteer at Bennett through 2019 helping in the library and decorating bulletin boards. Nancy loved and was loved by the Bennett Community. She made many wonderful friends there. Nancy loved gardening and was known for her green thumb. She shared many gardening tips and plants with friends. She also shared many of her indoor plants at Bennett in the school library.
Survivors are her daughter Aleta Wagner Lowe, son David Wagner, granddaughter Bryony (Tanner) Huber, and grandsons Kenneth (Tara) Lowe and Jonathan (Kayla) Lowe, and her beloved canine companion, Cookie. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her parents and her sister, Donna Whicker. Internment Linn Grove Cemetery, Greeley in a private family ceremony.
A memorial open house will be planned for June 2023 in Fort Collins, Colorado. Date announcement to follow. Contributions can be made in Nancy’s memory to the American Heart Association or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
