Larry loved his family and his second greatest love was contract bridge. He was a nearly lifelong member of the American Contract Bridge League, the governing board of competitive bridge in the United States. Larry was highly successful playing bridge in local clubs, regional and national tournaments. He won numerous titles over the years and attained the high level of Diamond Life Master. He was published in bridge magazines and gave lessons for players before local contests. Larry won annual trophies awarded to those with the most master points during the year. He was always a gracious opponent, offering kind words and encouragement. He was a friend, mentor and a gentleman to the core. His exemplary sportsmanship, kind heart and generosity was felt by all he encountered.
Master historian, basketball enthusiast, author, soldier, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, devoted friend and loving husband are only a few of the words used to describe who Larry was to us all. The competitiveness, joy, humor, and love he brought to all of us will be missed. We will each take a piece of what Larry gave us and continue to share it with the world.
Larry is survived by his wife Linda Matheny; brother Don Matheny and sister in-law Ruth Matheny; daughter Chris Lawson, son in-law Rick Lawson and grandson Lance Lawson; daughter Stephanie Grosskopf, daughter in-law Diane Kelly and granddaughter McKayla Grosskopf; niece Kimberly Haller; nephew Mark Davis.
Larry will be laid to rest on May 15th, 2024 1:00pm MST, at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. All are invited to join the family at Staging Area C.
