Born in Garden City, Kansas on November 2nd, 1942, Kay was the second of four children born to Earl Ole and Alice Mariam Wood. She joined her parents and older brother, Keith, on the farm in Grant County Kansas. She attended school in Warrendale, 21 miles northeast of Ulysses, Kansas. In the summer of 1951, Kay contracted polio. On the day she was diagnosed, God intervened. Her parents were blessed with a good crop that enabled them to get a new car, allowing them to get Kay to Wichita just in time to get her into an iron lung. Her life was saved.
On March 23rd, 1960, at the age of 17, Kay married the love of her life, Glen Wayne McCurry at Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses. She chose being a wife over her graduating class and they settled on a farm in Grant County. Glen and Kay lived in numerous places including Dodge City and Ness City, KS, Dumas and Muleshoe, TX, Heston, KS and Ulysses, KS where they lived the longest before moving to Loveland, Colorado in 1969. Kay was a professional housekeeper. She enjoyed ironing clothes for people, and you couldn’t find anyone to do a finer job. She started her own housecleaning service and her daughter, Kayla, began working with her. Kayla carries on mom’s legacy today.
As a result of her childhood polio, Kay faced a lifetime of health challenges, all of which she powered through with dignity. Despite these challenges, she always cared dearly for her friends, most of whom she outlived, and she always worked hard and cared for her family. Kay was baptized into the Christian Faith when she was young and remained closed to God throughout her life. She loved Christian music. In her leisure time, Kay loved puzzles, playing mahjong, and watching Dr. David Jeremiah. She loved watching Gun Smoke with her husband and watching scary movies with her son, Todd. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoyed watching movies with grandma.
Kay was a wonderful mother. She was caring and always approached issues with humor. She thrived on the love of her family and was content with a simple life. Gift giving was her love language. She was kind and generous, almost to a fault. Kay was friendly and welcoming. She never knew a stranger because to meet Kay was to know her and to love her. Kay loved a good laugh and found humor in all things. Joy and laughter filled her soul. She will be dearly missed by all who were blessed enough to know her.
Kay leaves behind her beloved husband of 65 years, Glen McCurry; children Debra Turner (Chad), Kayla Morgan (Frank), and Todd McCurry (Rosemary); grandchildren Adam Richter (Heather), Joshua Richter (Samantha), Andrea Richter, Justin McCurry (Andrea), Michael Morgan (Jackie), David Morgan (Amber Parker), Cassandra Padia (David Sanchez), Christopher McCurry, and Joel Morgan (Lauren Binder); and her great-grandchildren Raven Enslow, Caleb Padia, Finnian Richter, Gavin McCurry, Tristen Elliott, Gauge Morgan, Addisyn Morgan, Jett Richter, Anastasia McCurry, Troy Parker, Ari Richter, True Morgan, Brody Morgan, Logan Richter, Paisley Kirkpatrick, Nova Richter, and Maximus McCurry. She is also survived by siblings Keith Wood (Sharon), Connie Lane, and Dennis Wood (Denise), and a sister-in-law, Sandra Smith.
She is preceded in death by her mother & father, and by a grandson, Christian McCurry.
