Helen was born in Gary, Indiana on August 15, 1919 to Charles and Clara Robinson Spurrier. In 1941 she graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in Merchandising. She went to work for Carson Pirie Scott Department store in downtown Chicago. Her roommates introduced her to Donald Frick, a Navy officer stationed at the Naval Pier. They were married on April 10, 1944 at Navy Pier. Barbara, their daughter was born there in 1945. After Donald finished his time with the Navy, they eventually moved to Boulder where he completed his MS and PHD. They then moved to Gunnison Colorado so Don could be on staff at Western State College. In 1951, their son David was born. They then moved to Trinidad for four years and finally moved to Fort Collins where Don became a professor at Colorado State University. During this time, Helen devoted her time to her family and was a volunteer for many groups. She was involved with American Association of University Women (AAUW) in Gunnison, Trinidad, and Fort Collins. In Fort Collins, she also joined the CSU Women’s Association and volunteered at the Bonfils Blood Drives on campus. Through AAUW in Fort Collins, she dedicated herself to the annual Used Book Sale and helped on the board of the AAUW Coop House which was off campus housing for women attending CSU. At that time, there was little off campus housing for women students.
Helen enjoyed traveling with her husband until his death in 2000. After his death, she continued to make trips to Maui with her family. Helen loved to play bridge and belonged to several bridge groups, was an accomplished seamstress, and enjoyed going up to the family cabin near Pingree Park that Don and David built over 50 years ago. Her last visit to the cabin was when she was 100 years of age.
She is survived by daughter Barbara and husband John Crowfoot, her son David and wife Gail Frick, her grandchildren Adrian Crowfoot (Jennifer), Amy Crowfoot (Jason Bray), Donald Frick and Anna (Dustin Boyd) along with her great grandchildren William Crowfoot, Gregory Crowfoot, Owen Frick, Lincoln Bray and her step-grandchildren Kyle and Lauren Hohlt.
The family would like to thank the staff of Columbine West Health and Rehab Center and the Worthington for their caring support of Helen for over 20 years. We also want to thank Dr. Abbey and his staff who provided both health and emotional care for her for many years, and Annie Van Longenhoven for her assistance and companionship with Helen over the past few years. Finally, to the staff at Pathways Hospice who provided support to Helen for her final months.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date this summer.
