Glenn Richard Stewart was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming on April 5, 1951 to Irving and Jean Stewart. He graduated from Cheyenne Central High School in 1969, attended the University of Wyoming, then took a summer job with the Union Pacific Railroad. He married Beth Smith of Cheyenne and they had Suzanna and Heather.
Glenn’s summer job as a railroader turned into a 42-year career as a conductor. He worked many routes over the years, ending his career running between Cheyenne and Green River, Wyoming.
Glenn had dozens of stories of the railroad and the colorful characters he worked with, and many mountain bike stories, and he loved to tell his tales to others, he was a good storyteller.
In 1986 Glenn moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. He continued to work out of Cheyenne, but as he used to say, Colorado has 340 less days of wind and he preferred to live here! He met Sandy through a singles group at Vineyard Church and they married and with her daughter Kelly, they made their home in Fort Collins.
The Vineyard of the Rockies has been Glenn’s church home for many years. In past years he was involved in ministry teams and men’s ministry and small groups. His faith in Jesus was paramount in his life.
Glenn was passionate about being outdoors and he was an expert double-black diamond skier and he taught all the kids to ski. In 1983 he took up the new sport of mountain biking, and he rode as often as he could. He traveled through much of the western U.S. to ride bike trails. He loved mapping out trails and rides and planning rides. He met many other riders on the trails and continued to ride with them. He was affectionately known as Capitan America (also Ruffy). In 1999 and 2002 he wrote two mountain bike guides of his favorite trails around Fort Collins and Grand Junction. He entered and won several mt. bike races in Colorado. Along with a group of friends he had met over the years, they formed Sand Camp. The Sand Campers met for several years to ride trails together.
Glenn loved music, especially soft jazz, and always had it playing at home, in his truck and on his MP3 players.
In 2003 Sandy and Glenn bought their Harley motorcycles; their motorcycle trips were some of their most enjoyable times together.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Sandy, daughters Suzy and Heather, step-daughter Kelly, six grandchildren- Tika, Tori, Nate, Nick, Megan and Savannah, nine great-grandchildren and one brother, Ken.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial Service will be Tuesday October 3, 2023 at Vineyard Church of the Rockies on 1201 Riverside Ave. in Ft Collins.
