Gene was born on April 11, 1935 in Teaneck, New Jersey to Frank and Frances Irene Nagler. He graduated from Teaneck High School and attended Fairleigh Dickinson University. He married Marilyn Anne Mullen on May 12, 1956 in St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge, New Jersey. The two were happily married for 67 years.
Gene started out working in the insurance industry, but took a job with Reuters America in the early 70s as a salesman for their financial quotes, news, and information services on Wall Street in New York City. He was asked to move to Dallas, Texas in 1972 to open up the company’s first Southwest Region office, where he became District and then Regional Manager for Reuters until his retirement in 1994.
Gene was a wonderful and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He patiently taught his four children everything from how to care for their cars and do home repairs to handling their finances. He was a talented carpenter, doing home projects, building benches, shelves, and bird and owl houses and could often be found working in the yard. He loved the ocean, especially the Jersey Shore and the Gulf Coast, and believed that ocean water could heal any number of ailments. He and Marilyn truly made friends everywhere they went. They enjoyed sharing their stories of times spent with family and friends from New Jersey, Texas, and Alabama. He, like Marilyn, loved animals and cherished the many pets they had over the years. He was the great worrier of the family and always checked in to make sure everyone was okay, and didn’t sleep when they weren’t.
Gene lovingly looked after his wife, Marilyn, and was lost after her death on August 5, 2023. He has now joined her one month to the day after she left us. We are all heartbroken and will miss them both so much, but are grateful that they had each other, and that we had them, for so many years. They have shown us what love and commitment mean and have instilled in us all the great importance of family.
Gene is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn Anne Nagler; his parents; his son, Kerry Nagler; and his brother, Gerard “Jerry” Nagler.
Gene is survived by his daughter, Sharon Eulert, and her husband, James, of Ft. Collins, Colorado; his son, Tim Nagler, and his wife, Marcela, of Panama City Beach, Florida; his daughter, Jackie Karlsson, and her husband, Stefan, of Denton, Texas; grandchildren, Sarah Swanson, and her husband, Tommy, of Placitas, New Mexico; Laura Wagner and her husband, Nick, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Anna Karlsson Rushing and her husband, Jordan, of Dallas, Texas; Alex Karlsson and his partner, Samantha, of San Diego, California; Charlié Boney of Terrell, Texas; step-grandchildren, Miguel Angel Castañeda of San Diego, California; Dani Angel Castañeda of Panama City Beach, Florida; great-grandchildren, Ilana, Aria, Donovan, Ruby, Silas, and Ian; his brother Richard Nagler and his wife, Janice, of Solvang, California, and his English Springer Spaniel, Rosie.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Denton, Texas.
