Born Francisco Geronimo Montoya in Las Vegas, New Mexico, he was the oldest son of five born to Frank T. Montoya, Sr. and Mary Maldonado Montoya. He was of the Catholic faith and was an alter boy when he was young. The family moved to Brush, Colorado and then to Platteville, Colorado where Frank graduated from high school. He married Carmen Garcia in 1960 and they moved to Greeley, Colorado and raised four children. Frank and Carmen parted ways in 1973, and he married his current wife, Susan Montey Montoya on June 16, 1974. Frank passed away just 13 days before what would have been their 50th wedding anniversary. Frank and Sue had 2 children.
Frank worked at various jobs throughout his life, most notably in restaurant management. In 1980, after having worked for a roofing company for three months, he decided to start his own roofing company in Fort Collins. With so little experience in the industry, starting this business presented many challenges, but Frank was a big risk taker. He was never afraid to try and worked hard to make it work. In a matter of just a few years, FM Roofing was a million dollar company doing work for big name clients such as Walmart, Taco Bell, Hewlett Packard, and a host of others, including many residential customers who quickly became friends. He had the gift of gab, could sell snow to Eskimos, and never turned down a trade or bargain. FM Roofing, Inc. is still active today, going on 45 years in business, which is pretty remarkable for a roofing company in this day and age.
Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, drag racing, trap shooting, shooting pool, playing cards, and just any adventure. He dragged us all along and those that chose to follow had a blast and made memories galore. Frank’s family called him a “tornado”. He truly lived his life to the fullest, on his terms, and did the things he wanted to do. He will be missed.
He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Susan; his six children, Frank C. (Linda), Debbie (Richard), Yvette, Yvonne, Jeremy, and Beth; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one on the way, and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving Frank are his mother-in-law, Lavon Montey; four brothers, Pete (Pam), Tony (Theresa), Ben, and Pat (Linda); and in-laws, Judy Brunk (Ken) Keith Montey (Vivian), Sandra Raisley, Kevin Montey and Wayne Montey; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, who went along on some of his adventures.
He forever talked of his Platteville High Family, his golfing buddies – especially the noon group, and his forever friends he made in the business world, on hunting and fishing trips, and through the various sports he participated in. Frank’s family meant more to him than the world will ever know.
A Memorial Service will be taking place June 28, 2024 at 4:00 PM at Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins, Colorado.
