Captain Donald D. “Don” Burbank, Supply Corps U.S. Navy (Retired) sailed away to that final safe harbor with his Lord on June 27, 2024. He was born to Edith and Noel Burbank on July 16, 1929 in Dayton, Ohio. Noel deserted the family six months later and Edith took her two daughters and Don to live with her parents in Paw Paw, Michigan. In 1935, Don moved with his Grandparents to Niles, Michigan. He graduated from Niles High School in 1947 and was selected for the Navy ROTC program. The Navy sent him to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah. Here he met his college sweetheart, Marivene Woods.They were married September 1, 1949. Upon graduation on June 9, 1951 he was commissioned an Ensign and reported for active duty. During his naval career, he served in four ships including 2 Destroyers during the Korean War and a resupply ship off Vietnam. He earned his MBA from Northwestern University. He was the commanding officer of the Navy Materials Transportation Office in Norfolk Virginia and served on the staff of the Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon. He served his nation for 28 years retiring in 1978, after which the family moved to Fort Collins. During his lifetime, he lived in 13 States and two foreign countries, Japan and Vietnam. Everywhere they went the family was active in church. In Fort Collins that included First Christian Church, the American Baptist Church and Heart of the Rockies Christian Church. He was proud of his service to his country and his Lord. In Colorado he worked for Teledyne Water Pik for 15 years, as manager of distribution and warehousing for most of the time and as production manager at the Loveland facility for the last 4 years. Marivene passed away in 1994 and six years later Don married long time friend Shirley Herzog. He gained not only a love he never expected to have again, but a large, loving family. He enjoyed singing and sang in quartets, choruses, and church choirs all of his life. He also enjoyed travel and the family toured all the areas in which they were stationed. He liked to play various games with family and friends and was always a gracious winner, whether at Monopoly, cards, dominos, or Farkle. He enjoyed reading and wore out two Kindles. He also enjoyed eating out with friends, family cookouts, and fellowshipping with church friends.
Don was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Grace Holland.
His mother and stepfather Edith and Wallace Kahn and His Wives Marivene and Shirley.
He is survived by his sons: Bruce Burbank (Lisa) of Clearwater, Florida
Dean Burbank (Anne) of Delta, Colorado.
Daughter Frances Wolff (Dave) of Coulee City, Washington
Stepchildren:
Bob Herzog (Nancy) of Loveland, Colorado and
Jeff Herzog of Fort Collins.
His Daughters: Christine Miller (David) of Sarasota, Florida
Kellie Ballinger (Kerwyn) of Fort Collins
And seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 8 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Allnutt Funeral Home, 650 W Drake Rd, Fort Collins.A funeral service and celebration of life will be held at Heart of the Rockies Christian Church, 6501 Brittany Drive, Fort Collins at_10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 9.
Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W Kenyon Ave, Denver, on Wednesday, July 10 at 12:30 PM with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heart of the Rockies Christian Church, or a charity of your choosing.
