Born October 18, 1937 in Lansdale, PA he was the first child of Daniel D. and Ruth C. (Bolton) Leatherman. At age 16 he moved to Goshen, IN to attend Goshen College. He graduated in 1958 with a BA in Economics. He earned a Masters degree in Political Science from the University of Chicago and spent 6 years teaching at Goshen College. He worked as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service in Goshen, IN from 1972 - 2002. Upon retirement he relocated to Fort Collins, CO.
Dan is survived by his life partner, Chester McQueary, of Fort Collins, a sister Esther Kisamore of Colorado Springs, CO, and a brother Jim (Pat) Leatherman of Plymouth, IN.
Dan was married to Kathryn L. (Shantz) Leatherman from 1960-1980 with whom he raised 4 children. She preceded him in death on May 30,2023. Also surviving are children Fred Leatherman, Sue (Greg) Leatherman Sommers, Lori (David) Hughes of Goshen, IN and Rebekah Leatherman of New Orleans, LA. Dan leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Dan will be remembered as a person committed to social justice, generous with his resources, and a man who enjoyed discussing the issues of the day with a wide range of fellow travelers.
A memorial service, written by Dan, will be held at 1 PM Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Foothills Unitarian Church in Ft. Collins. It will be available via livestream.
In Goshen, IN on Saturday, November 4, 2023 his children will host a time of “Remembering Dan” at 2 PM in Newcomer Center 19 on the Goshen College campus. All are welcome.
