Charles Alan Howe, 84, passed away on April 9, 2023 in Fort Collins, Colorado. Alan was born February 17th, 1939 in Deadwood, South Dakota to Geraldine Lyons and Charles Maxfield Howe. Alan spent his younger years in various areas of South Dakota including Deadwood, Spearfish, Sturgis and Rapid City. He spent his free time as a child mastering the art of photography, his lifelong passion.
In the early 1950’s his family moved to Fort Collins where Alan attended Fort Collins High School. He graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1957. Immediately following high school, Alan spent two years in the United States Navy as a photographer and then returned home to Fort Collins in 1959. At that time, he worked for Forney Industries and a local floral shop. Soon after, he enrolled at Colorado State University where he majored in Graphic Design. In July of 1962, Alan married Rita Kramer. Alan graduated in 1964 from CSU and then went to work for Hewlett Packard in the mid 1960’s as a graphic designer and held various positions including Trade Show Manager before retiring in 1996.
After retirement, Alan enjoyed volunteering with Art in Public Places for the City of Fort Collins as well as with the Estes Park Senior Center. He also enjoyed traveling, antiquing, his 1968 Pontiac Convertible along with his 1987 Buick Grand National. Alan loved spending time with his grandchildren and making unique bookmarks and coasters for all his friends and family. Alan spent the last 20+ years with his loving significant other Joann (Jody) Thompson. Together they treasured living along the Big Thompson River near Estes Park as well as in Fort Collins.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Geraldine (Lyons) Pelkey and Charles Maxfield Howe and his wife Rita (Kramer) Howe. Alan is survived by his children, half-brother, two step-sisters and his grandchildren. A private family memorial is planned.
