Carol was born in Sabino, New Mexico on January 6th, 1932 to Jose and Josephita (Ornelas) Gonzales. She had three brothers and three sisters. Carol married James Patrick Higgins in Raton, New Mexico on November 26, 1950. Together they welcomed ten children: Patricia, Kathleen, David, Rose Marie, Vivian, Phillip, Wallace, Margaret, Susan, and Theresa. Jim was a military man and the family moved all over the country and even overseas. Carol stayed at home to raise her children and care for her household. She was a devoted wife and mother.
Carol’s education was less than formal but she always said that she was “still learning”. She was an avid reader. She enjoyed family gatherings and time with friends. She also enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. Carol loved to work in her garden. She was always happy to have her hands in the dirt. She really loved pulling weeds. More than anything else, Carol loved her family.
Affectionately known as Carol, Mom, Grandma, and Shortee, Caroline Marie Higgins was tough as nails and soft as silk. She lived a long and happy life full of many blessings. She will be dearly missed.
Carol’s legacy of love and family will live on in the hearts and memories of her children, Pat (Lawrence) Kathie, David (Bre), Rose (Rick), Vivian (Steve), Wally, Suzi (Robert), and TJ (Brian); her eighteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and her two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, a brother, numerous nieces and nephews, and three awesome neighbors that were like family to Carol. She is greeted on the other side by her husband, Jim, her son, Phil, daughter Margy, and by her son-in-law, Chuck.
A Graveside Committal Service will be held and Carol will be placed to rest on Friday, May 17th, 2024 at 2:30pm at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Fort Collins. A Memorial Gathering will follow at 3pm at Resthaven Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Colorado Talking Book Library and help those that can't read standard print stay connected to books and reading. And whenever you're missing Carol, pull some weeds. Treasured memories of Caroline and words of condolence for her family are welcome at www.resthavencolorado.com.
