Thomas Steven Hermes, age 63, of Frisco, Texas passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, October 23, 2023. He was born on July 8, 1960, in Kansas City, KS to John V. Hermes and Virginia Hermes.
Tom was extremely involved with St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Frisco, and throughout his time there, touched just about every ministry from A to Z. He found his place as a middle school Faith Formation teacher with a reputation as “the fun one;” all the kids wanted to be in his class, and the parents wanted him to be the one who taught their kids. Tom loved his Kansas sports, never missing a Chiefs or Jayhawks game. He worked in Frisco ISD for many years, first, as a substitute teacher, then in a permanent position at Sem Elementary. He was beloved by all, wherever he went.
As Tom's children grew up, they remembered him being actively involved in the neighborhood, throwing pool parties, 4th of July parades, grill-outs at home, you name it. He was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at Emporia State University and kept up with lifelong friends. He always loved word games; he was never without a crossword puzzle (he brought the New York Times crossword to a rock concert once!), and got very into Wordle after Covid. Tom wasn't particularly fond of cats, but eventually fell in love with his oldest child’s cat, Charles. He loved to hang on to traditions, like the blue shirt(s) he got every year for his birthday. He was loyal and sweet and loved life.
Tom is preceded in death by both of his parents, John and Virginia Hermes and brother-in-law Daryl Rindt.
He is survived by his children, Diane “Max” (David Reyes) and Matthew; siblings, Victoria Rindt, Lynda Heimbach (Jeffrey), Janet Day (Steve Traylor), Michael Hermes, and Douglas Hermes.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 2, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 21650 W. 115th Terr. Olathe, KS followed by private family burial in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.
A memorial service in Frisco, TX is pending.
