Delia "Dee" Hightower (Futrell), passed away on January 13, 2022 at the age of 81 after prolonged illnesses including Parkinson's disease, emphysema and heart disease. She is survived by her husband, Dr Leroy Hightower, daughter Sally Hightower, and sister Mary Mihalakos. She is preceded in death by her parents, Talbot and Mae Futrell and brother James Futrell.
Dee attended Garland High School graduating in 1958 and then attended SMU for several years before entering the work force. She eventually became an executive secretary working for several CEO's and one company president in the Dallas area. She married her husband in 1968 while he attended Southwestern Medical School and supported him through his internship following which he entered the Air Force. In the 8 years during which his residency and fellowship were completed they had a baby, lived in four different cities, and spent a year in Taiwan. They finally separated from the military and entered private practice in Abilene, Texas where they remained for 25 years. Upon retiring in 2001 they moved to Frisco to be near their daughter.
Dee was blessed by beauty, but never seemed to be very impressed by it, seldom taking herself that seriously. She had a good sense of humor and loved people. She loved entertaining , giving lavish dinners for which she would cook for days beforehand. Through her years they were members of several dinner clubs and family always gathered at their home for holidays. She had many interest, among which included the game of Bridge. She belonged to a ladies bridge club in Abilene for many years. She loved to travel and that we did for many years each summer. She had strong opinions but never became dogmatic. She was a fiercely loyal mother and wife, but always fair to her critics. In later years, she accepted Christ as her Savior and spent years in Bible study in BSF. She gave her love freely and as a result was loved by many. She will be missed and by her family at least, never forgotten.
A visitation will be held Thursday, January 20th from 6pm until 8pm at Stonebriar Funeral Home in Frisco, Texas. A graveside service will be held on Saturday the 22nd at 1pm in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene, Texas. And a Celebration of Life will be held Thursday the 28th at 2pm at Stonebriar Funeral Home.
