Carol was born in the Cave Spring area of Roanoke County, Virginia to Leonard G. and Stella Poff Wertz who preceded her in death. She attended Back Creek Elementary School and Cave Spring High School. She wed James E. "Jim" Pannell on April 22, 1961 and they have two sons. Duane R. Pannell, SR in Vernal, Utah and Timothy W. Pannell in Frisco, Texas. She resided in Roanoke, Virginia until the mid-seventies when her husband's job transfers took them to Savannah, GA, Miamisburg, OH, Knoxville, TN, Winchester, VA, Nashville, TN and a few years after Jim's retirement they relocated to Frisco, Texas to be near our youngest son, her Daughter-in-law and Granddaughter. She made life-long friends at every location. She especially enjoyed Mahjong, Canasta, Bunco, Bingo and Bocce Ball with her many new friends at Frisco Lakes as well as finally being near some family after years of relocations.
Carol has been fighting COPD for a number of years and the past three years have seen a steady decline. Having part of her left lung removed when she was a child certainly hastened the decline. However, her spirits remained good throughout the ordeal.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years Jim, two sons and Daughter-in-Laws, Duane and Selena Pannell in Vernal, Utah and Tim and Darlene Pannell in Frisco, TX and her sisters and Brother-in-Laws Cheryl and Tom Hodges in Vinton, VA and Ann and Kent VanHoy in Catawba, VA, sister in law and brother in law Linda and RL Thomas Pulaski, VA and five Grandchildren, Duane R. Pannell, JR, Mallory (and Jade) Walter, Christa (and Brandon) Collins, Emily (and Geoff) Johnson and Nathan Pannell and six Great-Grandchildren, Lilia and Wyatt Pannell, Max, Jade and Cassidy Walter and Emma Collins. Rassi, a miniature Poodle also has to be included as he was her pride and total joy and looks for her every day.
There has been an outpouring of good wishes and prayers both during her illness and after her passing. She was a devoted wife, wonderful mother who loved her sons and all the Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren and a sweet, caring woman where all were concerned. I know how difficult it was for all of us to watch her health decline. Thanks to everyone for their kind thoughts, heartfelt expressions and visits. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her.
