Barbara Denise Baggs, resident of Frisco, Texas, since 2005, passed away May 17, 2021. She was an artist, equestrian, musician, career woman and devoted mother. Barbara bravely fought a prolonged battle against two debilitating diseases, Multiple Sclerosis and Frontotemporal Degeneration; her strength was inspirational.
Barbara was born in Newport News, Virginia, but raised her three daughters in Houston, Texas. As a teen, she loved riding her horse, Charlie, and taking part in early morning fox hunts over the battlefields of Yorktown. Her hero was John Wayne, and her favorite vocalists were Neil Diamond, Glen Campbell and George Strait. She enjoyed playing the guitar, but her talent for the piano was noted by Mr. Cary McMurran, conductor of the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra, who accepted her as a student (one of very few he deemed as exceptional).
Barbara attended Homer L. Ferguson High School in Newport News, graduated from Greenbrier Academy in West Virginia, and Katharine Gibbs School in Boston, Mass. While living in Houston, she had a successful career as an Executive Assistant with ExxonMobil Corporation. During those years, she always found the time to support her children’s activities by doing such things as working late into the night sewing prom dresses and dance costumes, driving all over town to various performances and practices, and cheering them on at games and competitions. She took great pride in the achievements of her three daughters. Throughout her life, Barbara proudly encouraged her daughters not only to succeed, but to excel in their pursuits and follow their wildest dreams.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Virginia C. Baggs and Wilbur James Baggs, Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Alison Lane Popek and her husband, Jason; Bo Yates and her husband, Bobby; Martha Madison and her husband, AJ Gilbert; her sister, Beverly Hornsby; her stepmother, Jessie Fleta Baggs; granddaughters, Tatym and Grayson Doucet, Lauren and Alyssa Yates, and Charley Gilbert; three nephews and two grandnephews.
Barbara’s family wishes to express their gratitude to her loving caregivers, Margaret Kanyua, Beatrice Miricho, and Lucy Kamau at HuntLeigh Homes in Frisco, TX and Kay Watson of Ardent Hospice, for their many years of loving care and attention.
A funeral service for Barbara will be held Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Stonebriar Funeral Home, 10375 Preston Rd., Frisco, Texas 75034.
