Sunday G. Vigil was born on February 22, 1916 to Ceferino Vigil & Bartola Garcia Vigil in Colton California. He was one of twelve children. He enlisted in the United States Army September 30, 1941 at the age of 25. He served in the 409th Infantry Regiment during World War II. Sunday returned to the United States on the USS Lejeune which sailed from Le Harve, France on September 10, 1945. He met and married the love of his life Nellie Vigil on June 16, 1946 in Firebaugh, California at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Sunday worked as a diesel mechanic with the V.C. Britton Company for over 20 years, Firebaugh Equipment for 15+ years until he retired at the age of 85. Together, Sunday and Nellie raised 6 children, Sandra Vigil Hamilton of Northern California, Andrew Vigil, Domingo Vigil, Robert Vigil of Puerto Rico, Pam Vigil Mendoza of Madera, Debbie Vigil Heather of Firebaugh. Sunday continued his military service by volunteering with the VFW post 7380 honor guard. He enjoyed war movies, was a San Francisco Giants fan, and he loved to dance.
Sunday is preceded in death by his parents, all but 1 sibling, and his wife of 60 years Nellie Vigil, sons Andrew Vigil and Domingo “Mingo” Vigil. He is survived by 1 sister Tillie Vigil of Las Vegas Nevada, 3 daughters and 1 son, 19 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
