Roger was born and raised in New York. He received his Associate Degree in Applied Science and Food Technology from the University of New York in 1959 and then graduated from the University of Georgia in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science and Agri- culture Degree.
Roger was employed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Fresno Office before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1963. As a member of Company B 1st Battalion 1st Brigade at the Ford Ord Army Training base, he completed his basic training and was then transferred to New Orleans where he was assigned to the Army Veterinary Corps until he was honorably discharged in 1965.
Roger returned to Fresno to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During his 34 years of exemplary employment he was recognized with many awards and certificates. Roger's research resulted in several books and co-authored articles being published by the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, HortScience and the Journal of Food Quality.
Roger married the love of his life, Sarah Irma Rojas at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fresno on September 23, 1967, and they raised their family in Fresno.
Roger loved to spend time with his grandchildren and was an active and proud member of the Central Cal Boaters & RVs Club.
Roger is survived by his brother, Michael Rij Jr.; his wife, Irma; their three children, Ed, John, Sarah van Zoest; and eight wonderful grandchildren.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Graveside Service at Clovis Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fresno.
