Roger was born the same day, May 19, two years after his parents, Donald and Phyllis, welcomed Roger’s brother Wayne. In 1953, the Bomans moved to Southern California and Roger graduated from Montclair High School in 1961. He then attended Chaffey Junior College, Cal Poly Pomona, and graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Cal State University San Bernadino.
In February of 1965 he married his loving wife, Brenda Haas. On May 17, 1966 they welcomed their first son, Quinn. Then on January 26, 1972 they were joined by their second son, Kent. The family lived in Kingsburg until 1974 when they moved to San Diego, California. They returned to Kingsburg in 1978.
Roger had an illustrious professional career that started in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At this time, he met Don Smith and they together started Smith Boman and Associates. Roger Boman was known as one of the pioneers of the crop insurance industry. Roger not only insured crops, but also was a grower himself as he was a raisin farmer and citrus grower. He was eventually able to expand the family farm business and enjoyed working in the Ag Industry. Roger had a great sense of pride in being a grower because the result of hard work was tangible. He serviced a variety of growers over the years and developed relationships with those that he served. Also in 1985, he founded Transwestern Insurance Administrators. All these businesses are a significant part of Roger’s legacy that has been passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Roger had a passion for sports, especially football. Not only did he play football, he coached as well. He began coaching at Kingsburg High School. Then went on to coach at Reedley College. He finally coached at Fresno City College. He was a cornerstone inductee of the Fresno City Football Wall of Fame in 2006. This passion came to a completion through coaching his grandchildren at Copper Hills Elementary School and at Clovis North High School. Even after his grandchildren left Clovis North, you could still see him on the sidelines.
Another one of Roger’s passions was cars. He enjoyed restoring, driving, and showing many of his cars at Car Shows. He also enjoyed taking trips with his VW bus and camping with his VW buddies.
Roger had a passion for education, hard work, and family, a legacy that lives on through his children and grandchildren.
Roger was an incredible father and was excited to see his family grow through the marriages of his sons. Quinn and Jennifer were married in 1988 and Kent and Melissa were married in 1994. He was a proud grandfather to his six grandchildren: Zachary, Hailee, Brooke, Blake, Meg, and Trevor. He spent many years supporting them in their sports and activities and taking numerous trips as an entire family.
Roger was the son of the late Donald and Phyllis Boman. Roger was also preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Boman.
