Richard Elmer Stein, 82 was born on July 14, 1929 to Elmer and Wilamina Stein at the family home in Atwater CA.
He passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, July 5, 2011.
Richard attended Fruitland Elementary. In 1942 he moved to Fresno, where he attended Fort Miller and Fresno High. In high school he played football and participated in the first “Pig Bowl” which ended in a tie between Roosevelt and Fresno High.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp from 1947-1950, and continued his football career as a fullback and punter. Richard owned two service stations -Union Oil and Stein’s Shell Service, and ended his working career as a Petroleum Truck Driver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Bill; and twin sisters Lola and Lorraine .
Richard is survived by his loving and faithful wife Alice (Mellon), married 60 years, their four children, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Jeff, wife Tina, daughters Alice and Anna. Eric, wife Cathy, children Eric Shon and Shannon. Randy, wife Linda, sons Ryan and Joey. Julie Koehler, husband Bob, children, Dan, Nick and Amy. Other survivors include his sister Barbara Marie, and long time friend of 65 years – Nadine Anderson.
Alice would like to especially thank Bob for all his help and support by taking Richard to his doctor and dental visits.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 am. Funeral Services will follow at 12:00 pm. Both will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Fresno Memorial Gardens in the Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Central California SPCA and Disabled Veterans.
