He is the oldest of 4 brothers; Raymond, Edward, and Donald.
His family moved to Fresno, California when Richard was 13, where he attended Roosevelt High School.
He joined the United States Navy when he was 18 years old and served on the USS Burns in the South Pacific during WWII. His duty was to coordinate the elevation of the ship with the horizon of land in order to fire the guns. He also was involved in repairing radio equipment on board of the ship, which was due to the experience he had gotten at “Cooks Communication’s” in Fresno.
He left the Navy with an “Honorable Discharge” with “3 Stars” in the point system of the “Asiatic-Pacific Area”, “2 Stars” in the “Philippine Liberation” and received the “Victory Medal World War II”.
After his return from the Navy, he went back to Oklahoma to visit friends and relatives, when he was smitten by Clara Mae Tilley.
He then returned back to California where he reluctantly worked as a roofer, which in turn steered him back into furthering his education.
After 2 return trips to Oklahoma for visits, Richard and Clara married on April 13, 1949 in the Pastors Parsonage in Ripley, Oklahoma.
He then studied at technical school for Electronics at Oklahoma City University.
While attending Oklahoma City University, Richard was working part time after school at a soft drink bottling plant until a part time job opened up at “Sears” in radio and TV repair. Soon afterwards he was offered a better paying job at "Cox Electronics" doing repairs. After Graduating he moved the family out to California where he used the family car to be a television repairman around the San Francisco area.
When TV's started coming in to Fresno, Cook's Communications called him up and offered him a position back in the Fresno, where he remained for the rest of his life.
He had a successful career in the electronics field repairing TV’s, stereo’s, amplifiers, organs and anything else with components in it up until he retired at age 64.
Richard and Clara had 3 children. Thomas LeRoy Scrivner was born February 11th, 1951 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Susan Kay Scrivner was born October 5th, 1952 in San Francisco, California. Ronald Wayne Scrivner was born September 23rd, 1958 in Fresno, California. His compassion and emotional bonds with his children made him as much a playmate as a parent by turning everyday events into creative play, a practice he continued with his grandchildren and great grandchildren!
Richard’s faith was important to him. He was an active member of the “First Church of God” his whole life. Not only did he help to build the church on First and Saginaw, he was also involved with the “Men’s Prayer Group”, “EE Visitation Group” along with being the “Sound Technician” for church services and special events such as weddings and in later years helped to set up sound equipment for school plays and special functions.
Richard’s hobbies’ include fishing, camping and woodworking, but his favorite hobby was fishing. The fishing stories were never ending.
He also had a passion for a variety of music, from old time country to “Chet Atkins”, “Spike Jones” to “Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass”. His all-time favorite music was gospel, which comforted him and strengthened his faith.
Richard was a lover of animals and cherished his pets. From dogs (many inherited) to cats (many inherited), a Cockatiel, turtles (tortoise and terrapin) and even a rabbit. They were all his best friends that did not live long enough in his opinion.
Richard enjoyed his golden years with his wife Clara and family. They celebrated their 67th Anniversary last April.
He was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren who he thoroughly enjoyed playing games with and teasing. They loved it too!
Richard passed away on June 30, 2016 at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Fresno, California after a brief stay in the hospital for pneumonia treatment, his heart became weak and he peacefully passed away in the loving arms of his wife, Clara.
Richard was survived by his wife, Clara; brother, Raymond; children, Thomas and his spouse Gladys, Susan, Ronald and his spouse Mary Ann; grandchildren, John Lambert and his spouse Mia, Miles Scrivner, Chelsea Maxwell and her spouse William, Celeste Crider and her partner Michael Pueschner, Cheryl Street and her spouse David, James Lockwood and his spouse Tina; great grandchildren, Nathan, Christian and Jerimiah Lambert, Aiden Cox, Liam Maxwell, Ashley and Cameron Menser, Derek and Jasmine Daulton, and Jamie Lockwood.
Richard was more than just a good man; he was a wonderful Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather, who will be remembered by all of his family and friends as being warm and deeply caring.
Truly a gentle giant!
He leaves behind him a treasure or life-long friendships and wonderful memories!
Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Richard LeRoy Scrivner.
