Richard was born on October 6, 1942 in Mexico City. He was the second son of Ricardo and Carolina Puertas. He moved to California with his brother Adolph in 1951. He was raised working in the family's bakery, Ideal Bakery at an early age.
Richard was a self-made man, who became successful through his own wit, skills and determination. He started his career as an automobile mechanic in 1972. Richard started his own auto repair business, Puertas Automotive Service, at 1525 "0" Street, Fresno. Which is still in operation today. He has always faithfully served the community and his loyal customers in the downtown area. In 1984 Richard met Gloria Moreno whom he married in 1994. In 2014, Richard was diagnosed with cancer. Together Richard and Gloria went to chemotherapy treatments with the hope of a cure.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ricardo and Carolina Puertas.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Puertas, his siblings, Adolph and his wife Esther Puertas, Eduardo, Claudia Puertas. His children Carolina and her husband Rodney Fontes, Isabel and her husband Kevin Ronan, Katarina (Rico) Puertas III, Roger and his wife Kathy Pereida, Michelle and husband James Zabawa,
Matthew Uribes, and Robert Puertas. His grandchildren Emily Ronan, Andrew Uribes, Kaitlin Ronan, Valentina Fontes, Gabriella Fontes, Xavier Uribes, Audra Fontes, Nolan Pereida, Mia Pereida, Nathaniel Uribes, Dominic Uribes, Sabrina Zabawa, and Olivia Zabawa.
Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Bums, and Blair Funeral Home on Sunday, April 10, 2016 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm followed by a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John’s Cathedral on Monday, April 11,2016, at 9:00 am, immediately followed by a graveside service at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made in Richard's honor to the Art of Life Healing Garden.
