Phyllis was born March 11, 1928. in Greeley, Colorado, to Edwin and Gladys (Pointer) Anthony. She was the middle child in the family of three. Together with her older brother, Doyle, and younger sister, Donna, the family moved to Fresno, California. She attended school at Easterby Elementary and graduated from Roosevelt High School.
She met the love of her life, James D. Young, also from Fresno, while he was home on leave from the Marine Corps during World War II. They were married December 7, 1946, a day they said they would never forget! After the Korean War they settled in Fresno because as Jim said "I will never be cold again!" They were married for 72 years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband just sixteen days earlier, figuratively dying of a broken heart. They are survived by their children; David, Ricky, and Suzanne.
Phyllis worked at JC Penny's and Danes Nutrition. Later she worked for the California State Board of Medical Quality retiring in 1988. She serviced as a Sunday School teacher and AWANA leader at North Fresno Christian Church and Clovis Christian Church.
Phyllis loved to garden and growing flowers was a source of joy for her. Each spring she could be seen planting and tending the begonias which lined her front walkway. Beyond the flowers she kept a very well maintained and manicured lawn and planters. She took the time to notice the many amazing parts of the world around her. Everything from the small and beautiful butterflies to the majestic mountains of the Sierras, one of which she said had a "P" on it making it "her" mountain.
She was much the family matriarch and was loved as second mom by her nieces and nephews. Her home was the gathering place for family and friends to share fine meals and much love and laughter, with no one ever excluded. She was noted for her kind and gentle spirit yet always sending her children to dad for any deserved punishment. Phyllis is survived by her 10 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. She will be loved and missed by all, but has been reunited with the love of her life and especially her Savior.
