Muriel Wolf was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 21st, 1920, the youngest of six. Her parents and three of her siblings immigrated to the United States from Ireland; two siblings were born in the States. From the mid-West the family moved to Santa Monica, CA Muriel’s mother was a concert violinist and had played with the Irish tenor John McCormick. She taught her children to play the violin and piano. When Muriel was a girl, the family enjoyed playing chamber music in their home. The neighbors would gather on the front lawn to listen music wafting through the open windows.
When Muriel was twenty she met her husband August (Auggie) Wolf. But it was Muriel’s dog named Burb that turned Muriel’s and Auggie’s casual meeting into a courtship. They married, had five children and then settled in Fresno, CA, Auggie’s birthplace. Muriel began her professional career at age 16 and worked in various industries until her retirement from State Board of Equalization in 1985. But Muriel’s passion was her husband and children; she and Auggie created a loving home where their children flourished. Her children were not the only beneficiaries of her selfless spirit. Many of her friends and family members sought her counsel at her kitchen table over a cup of tea where she offered a listening heart and kind, sometimes challenging, words.
Muriel and Auggie enjoyed people. Muriel was a great hostess; she always found a way of stretching a meal meant for six into a meal to serve the many unexpected guests that walked in through the back door. Muriel and Auggie enjoyed hosting many gatherings of family and friends in their home as well as on campouts. She and her husband also enjoyed traveling with friends.
Muriel is survived by four of her children: George, Edward, Maureen and Patricia and her nine grandchildren.
In death, Muriel is united once again with Auggie; her son Father Ronald Wolf, S.J.; her parents, brothers and sisters and all her family who have gone before to prepare her room in the house of the Lord.
The family wishes to thank all who cared for their mother in her final years.
