Mario studied at the Universidad de Guadalajara, graduating with a medical degree in 1956. He moved to El Paso Texas with his wife, Josephine, in 1959 where he was an intern at Hotel Dieu Sisters' Hospital. The family then moved to Tucson Arizona in 1960 where Mario completed a surgery residency at Carondelet Saint Mary's Hospital. In September of 1965 the family moved to Fresno, where Mario began his family medicine practice. Mario was one of the first Spanish-speaking physicians in Fresno County. He practiced for over forty years and was very involved with healthcare issues amongst the Hispanic population, often appearing in local media programs. Mario was an avid photographer and long time member of the Fresno Camera Club. He also enjoyed horseback riding, hunting and traveling.
He is preceded in death by his parents Silvano and Elisa Gonzalez, and brother Alejandro Gonzalez. Mario is survived by his sisters, LiLi Rodriguez and Guadalupe Morales, and brothers, Hugo Gonzalez and Carlos Gonzalez.
Mario is survived by his wife, Josephine Gonzalez; son and daughter-in-law Mario Gonzalez Jr. MD and Becky Gonzalez and son Louis Gonzalez. He is also survived by daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Todd Sullivan; and daughters, Susan Maches and Rosa Gonzalez; his grandchildren, Rachel and Mario Gonzalez III, Natalie and Jennifer Maches, and Juliana and Clara Sullivan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
