Marie Ann Hayden passed away peacefully at the Nazareth House on the afternoon of November 14, 2022, while her daughter, Karen, held her hand. Born on July 5, 1922 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada to John and Bessie Liska, she celebrated her 100th birthday in July. Marie grew up on a farm with three older brothers.
Marie attended nursing school in Prince Albert, Saskatoon. After WWII, she was able to secure a job in Mt. Vernon, WA where she caught the eye of Navy mechanic, John “Jack” Hayden. They were married on October 9, 1948 and were together for 58 years. They eventually settled in Fresno where they raised their seven children. They were active parishioners at St. Anthony’s. Marie was an avid sports fan, devoted to the San Francisco Giants. In retirement, Marie and Jack enjoyed travelling around the country in an RV, joining up with Marie’s brother, John and his wife, Emily, to square dance and play bingo.
Marie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack, and her three brothers. She is survived by her seven children: Karen, John, Eugene “Gene” (Laura), Brian (Laura), Frank (Anne), Betty Ann and Anthony “Tony” (Michelle), and their four grandchildren Jack, Allison, Bill and Patrick.
A memorial services will be held on Monday, November 28 at11:00 am at the Nazareth House, 2121 N. First St., Fresno, CA. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Nazareth House in Marie’s honor. A reception will follow.
